A recent NY Times article discusses the use of non-traditional medicine and Alternative therapies in the US.
They cite distrust in physicians as a possible cause. I certainly disagree with this premise. The use of alternative medicine has been a part of every culture and stems more from ignorance. However, it also stems from unavailability of certain treatment modalities that Allopathic Medicine so far has not been able to give to the consumers. For example, a one pill-one hour cure for obesity, also cancer cure and cure for certain mental disorders like schizophrenia to name a few. When it is crunch time like major trauma, heart attack, surgery or stroke people do not even think about going to GNC and popping pills. I believe that no matter how advanced Allopathic Medicine becomes Alternative therapies will always flourish albeit on a fringe.
